The Science of Heart Rate Energy Tracking

When estimating energy expenditure, treadmill speed and incline are purely mechanical. They tell you the physical work performed, not how hard your body worked to do it. Factoring in heart rate bridges this gap by evaluating cardiac strain. The calculator utilizes the Keytel et al. clinical equations, which correlate oxygen consumption with heart rate, age, weight, and gender. It is particularly useful for workouts involving mixed speeds, intervals, or non-motorized training.

Heart-rate-based estimations are most accurate during submaximal aerobic exercise (between 50% and 90% of max heart rate). At very low heart rates, day-to-day factors like caffeine or dehydration can skew the results.

Tanaka's equation is widely considered more accurate for adults over 40 compared to the traditional '220 minus age' formula, which frequently underestimates max heart rate in older populations.

Male Equation:
EE (kJ/min) = -55.0969 + (0.6309 × HR) + (0.1988 × Weight in kg) + (0.2017 × Age)

Female Equation:
EE (kJ/min) = -20.4022 + (0.4472 × HR) - (0.1263 × Weight in kg) + (0.074 × Age)

Calorie Conversion:
Kcal/min = EE (kJ/min) ÷ 4.184

Tanaka Max Heart Rate formula:
Max HR = 208 - (0.7 × Age)
Example

A 30-year-old male weighing 160 lbs (72.6 kg) with an average heart rate of 140 BPM for 45 minutes computes: -55.0969 + (0.6309 × 140) + (0.1988 × 72.6) + (0.2017 × 30) = 53.7 kJ/min. Dividing by 4.184 yields 12.8 kcal/min. Total workout burn: 12.8 × 45 = 578 kcal.
