How Walking Pad Calories Are Calculated

Because under-desk walking pads operate flat without incline, the calculation utilizes the simplified ACSM walking equation for horizontal movement. Your weight and belt speed determine oxygen requirements, which translate directly to energy expenditure. To show the real-world value of a walking pad, the calculator computes the net calorie burn by subtracting resting metabolic energy (sitting baseline of 1.0 METs). This tells you exactly how many *additional* calories you burned by keeping active.

Walking pads are designed for passive NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). They are not intended for high-intensity training, but their long-term health benefits for glucose clearance and joint mobility are substantial.

Most walking pads have a maximum speed of 3.0 to 4.0 mph and do not feature incline systems. They are perfect for maintaining physical activity during video calls, emails, and repetitive desk tasks.

ACSM Flat Walking Equation:
VO2 (ml/kg/min) = (0.1 × Speed in meters/minute) + 3.5

Speed conversion:
Speed (m/min) = Speed (mph) × 26.8

Calorie Burn Formula:
Calories = VO2 × Weight (kg) × 0.005 × Duration (minutes)

Step Estimation:
Steps = Distance (miles) × 2,112 steps/mile
Example

A 160 lb (72.6 kg) person walks at 2.0 mph for 60 minutes. Speed is converted to 53.6 m/min. VO2 is calculated as (0.1 × 53.6) + 3.5 = 8.86 ml/kg/min. Total burn: 8.86 × 72.6 × 0.005 × 60 = 193 kcal. Sitting for that same hour would burn only 73 kcal, resulting in a net active increase of 120 kcal.
